At Cultivating Community, we believe that all of us can lead more exciting, fulfilling, and positive lives by becoming more conscious, active, and joyful around food. We plan to build up this section of our website up into a genuine resource for all of us who are moving in this direction. And, in the meantime, here are some of the many voices that we can all listen to and be inspired by:

  • We can be joyful while we’re trying to change the world. As long we we’re also aware that you can’t get away with things just by doing the easy stuff. You actually have to challenge certain things and put yourself in uncomfortable positions, often risking things in order to achieve real changeKaren Washington, Community Gardener, the Bronx, New York City
  • It takes a lot of skill to be able to grow food sustainably. It’s an art form. We need to raise agriculture up to another different level like they do in Europe where farmers are on the same level as engineers and doctors… because the food that we eat is the most important thing in our livesAntonio Roman-Alcala, Farmer/Activist, San Francisco, CA
  • The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no lifeWendell Berry, philosopher, farmer, and writer
  • I feel that good food should be a right and not a privilege, and it needs to be without pesticides and herbicides. And everybody deserves this food. And that’s not elitistAlice Waters, cook and food activist
  • When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilizationDaniel Webster
