Volunteer Opportunities
Cultivating Community needs volunteers to meet its community food work goals. Volunteering can help you deepen your connection to the land and natural environment while providing greater food security for those in need--and you can learn about sustainable farming, to boot. It's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise, meet interesting people, and experience what organic farming is about in the new millennium.
Please look at our Events page to get the most up-to-date listing of our events, and work days. Attendance at events is free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Below you can find some of our current volunteer needs. We also have a complete listing of current volunteer opportunities and upcoming events at the volunteermaine.org website.
If you're interested in arranging a volunteer opportunity that goes beyond what you see listed on the calendar, please e-mail our volunteer coordinator, or phone (207) 761.GROW. Thank you!
School Garden Club Assistant
Cultivating Community is looking for dependable volunteers to help deliver programming both inside the classroom and out as the weather warms. Currently we are working inside the classroom focused on cooking and nutrition. From Kale smoothies to squash pizza we are learning about healthy Maine food. We do keep our eyes on spring for outdoor work/play/exploration! There are big goals this spring season including tool sheds and garden beds to be built, and students to work with in the gardens.
This is a regularly scheduled weekly commitment average 2-4 hrs/week.
Tues & Wed 8-9:30 am
Thur - 9-12am & 3-4:30pm (same school)
(can be different people for am and pm sessions).
We are working inside through mid April and will then turn our attention toward the gardens!
The ideal volunteers bring love and ease when working with young children ages 5-10. Skills in cooking, gardening, teaching, or multi lingual are all helpful. Volunteers must be very flexible and work well in enthusiastic but perhaps "chaotic" situations. Accountability is greatly appreciated.
Please contact Nora if you are interested in working with our school partners.
CSA Advertising & Marketing Help
Do you know where potential CSA customers might be shopping? Cultivating Community is looking for volunteers to help us flyer for Fresh Start Farms CSA. Come stop by the office and grab a stack of flyers and help us get our name out into the community. We have drop sites all through southern Maine so if you live in towns from Kennebunk to Lewiston we would love your help and ideas about potential CSA customers.
Please contact Daniel if you are interested in helping us advertise.
Community Garden Coordinator
Cultivating Community is looking for a Community Garden Coordinator. The community garden is another way for Cultivating Community to ensure that fresh vegetables get onto the tables of as many of our neighbors as possible. This is the 3rd year of welcoming close to 50 community gardeners into our urban farm space to encourage people to grow food for themselves. Our goal is to create a garden that is as diverse as the community it is in. With that in mind we work to be accessible to as much of the community as possible. For this reason it is greatly appreciated if you can speak more than one language. Responsibilities would include garden recruitment primarily through phone or flyering methods targeting the East Bayside neighborhood.
Please contact Sarah Marshall at if you are interested in helping.
Outreach for Urban Farm Stands
