Jobs/Internships
Imagine a world in which all families, regardless of income, eat the healthiest, freshest produce; a world in which youth focus their prodigious energies on helping themselves and their neighbors; a world in which people care deeply about the land, their communities, and each other. This is the world we at Cultivating Community are creating.
Cultivating Community is committed to building sustainable communities. We do this through community food work, through youth and community development programs, and by promoting social and environmental justice. We are dedicated to providing the best possible climate for you to work, learn and achieve your goals while also advancing our mission of public service. Our practice has always been to treat each employee and intern as an individual. We seek to develop a spirit of teamwork – successful individuals working together to attain common goals.
Internship Opportunities for 2012
CSA Intern for Fresh Start Farms
Cultivating Community's Fresh Start Farms is looking for a CSA intern.
Fresh Start Farms is a collective of immigrant and refugee farmers who are participating in the NASAP program. 'Fresh Start Farms' growers sell produce to restaurants and grocers, at farmer's markets, and through the CSA. Produce is grown with soil health, environmental well being, and consumer happiness in mind. Although sites are not certified, farmers use organic practices and culturally appropriate growing techniques. Come help us find and communicate with new CSA customers.
The perfect intern would have flexible hours to be working both in the office 2-4 hours a week and out in the community as needed.
We are looking for someone to start this month (Feb) and commit to seeing the CSA through to full, hopefully late April or Mid-May.
Please email Daniel Ungier if you are interested.
Youth Kitchen Manager
Cultivating Community is looking for a Youth Kitchen Manager for the 2012 season. Cooking has become an integral part of CC's youth programs and we want your help in making it a great and educational experience for the Youth Growers. The Youth Kitchen Manager helps 3 high school students prepare lunch for 20 people Tuesday-Friday in July and August. The goal of our cooking program is to teach youth about how to prepare and share the vegetables that are growing at the farms they work in. Sitting down, tracing your meal and taking the time to eat together has been the most important community building block we have found yet.
We are looking for an intern to start the week of June 18th and continue on through the end of August. Ideally we would have one YKM for the season but if you are available one consistent day a week we may be able to work out an arrangement.
The ideal person would be comfortable with seasonal menu planning, quantity understanding both in planning and cooking and the ability to reuse left overs or stray ingredients. Flexibility is a must as well as the enjoyment of working with youth in the kitchen!
This position would be based out of Portland with cooking happening in both our urban kitchen as well as out at Turkey Hill Farm in Cape Elizabeth.
Please contact Sarah Marshall at if you are interested.
